What is Monophobia?
Monophobia is the extreme fear of being alone. A lot of us prefer the company of others however, we all need and enjoy some alone time. Not so for the Monophobic as they are literally terrified to be left alone even for the shortest amount of time, even to the extent that they would prefer someone to be with them when while using the bathroom! Being left alone can send someone suffering from this phobia into an extreme state of anxiety and panic.
Monophobia is derived from Greek words. 'Mono' means single, one or along and 'phobos', which means to dread or to fear.

Interesting Fact:
This phobia is unique as it is a phobia that animals as well as humans experience usually as a result of separation anxiety in the early stages of life.
Monophobia Causes:
This phobia is particularly rooted in traumatic experiences in childhood, especially the youngest and most formative years. If proper bonds with parents are not made due to an emotional distance or physical absence, it can cause the child to become clingy and desperate for affection and company. If parents suffer from mental health problems themselves they are often ill equipped to teach their children confident and independent ways of approaching the world and can accidently teach their children poor coping mechanisms to deal with stress and problems on their own. A child could also genetically inherit mental health conditions from a parent which can also feed into the phobia.
Abuse and codependent relationships can also create this phobia within children as well as other social factors like poor housing, lack of food and resources' etc.
Also if a child becomes separated from a parent and becomes lost this could create a very traumatizing experience for the child psychologically. The phobia can then develop in this fearful memory that if someone is not present at all times that one can become 'lost' again.

Monophobia Symptoms:
A person suffering from Monophobia will have very poor self confidence and will lack belief that they can do anything on their own. They tend to be nervous and fearful of a variety of things. This will make them very codependent on the people around them. This means that many people suffering from this phobia can end up in abusive relationships as they would rather be with someone mistreating them than be alone.
Someone with Monophobia might be underweight and look very fatigued as they might refuse to eat unless someone else is with them and not sleep through the night unless someone else is with them.
Monophobia has a strong connection to other phobias such as Agoraphobia (the fear of open spaces) and Thanatophobia (the fear of death). It is not uncommon for someone suffering with Monophobia to also have several other phobias at the same time.
If someone suffering from Monophobia is left alone they can experience having a panic attack with symptoms such as accelerated heart rate, rapid irregular breathing, cold and hot flushes, uncontrollable crying, sweaty palms, chest pains, nausea, dizziness and even fainting.

Why Should I Get Treated?
Being unable to be alone means you will never know yourself fully and will a live a life completely dependent on others. This means you will always be compromising yourself for others and their desires, preferences, choices etc. This is not only unhealthy but in some situations incredibly dangerous if controlling and abusive people are forming the codependent relationship with you.
You will suffer from a lack of confidence and doubt your abilities, meaning you will never realise your true potential to achieve and accomplish in life. All your choices and actions will be based on fear and your life will be filled with anxiety and constant worry that you will end up alone. Your mind will fixate on this one fear and instead of progressing and working towards goals and dreams in your life, you will do everything in your power to simply not be alone. This is ultimately a very tragic way to live life and will be full of regret. This phobia will drastically decrees your quality of life.
