What is Acrophobia?
Acrophobia is the fear of heights and is a very common fear, in fact it affects almost 1 in 20 adults! The meaning of Acrophobia comes from the Greek Word 'acron' which translates to 'heights' in English, and 'phobos', which means to dread or to fear.
People suffering with Acrophobia will avoid being up high at any cost. Just looking out of a window of a tall building can cause them to start to panic. Roller coasters and mountain hikes are out of the question. Even climbing up onto a ladder can cause someone with Acrophobia to trigger stress and anxiety! Acrophobia can lead to and overlap with other specific phobias such as the fear of flying (Aerophobia) and the fear of falling (Basiphobia)

Interesting Fact:
The fear of heights is often misunderstood as the same problem as vertigo which is untrue. Vertigo is different, as the person experiencing it has a spinning sensation when he or she is not actually spinning. Someone with vertigo may experience it without being at a great height.
Acrophobia Causes:
The cause of Acrophobia is interesting because it is one of the few fears that has its roots in one of the only two fears we are actually born with: The fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Obviously one needs to be at a height to fall, so there is a very natural, innate reason for the foundation of this phobia. However, most people are able to cope with heights without developing a phobia so it is the extreme reaction that makes people with Acrophobia unhealthy.
A person might develop Acrophobia from a fall in the past so heights become a subconscious trigger to the traumatic event. The mind over compensates to create a protective mechanism but ultimately it is too extreme and causes unnecessary anxiety.
Psychiatrists also associate negative thinking and other mental health issues such as OCD with Acrophobia. People with Acrophobia might have compulsive negative thoughts such as 'If I stand on the edge I will want to jump, or someone will push me over.' Fears that the building or structure they are standing on is weak and will collapse or a lift might fail etc, are constant negative worries running through a Acrophobia's mind. The fear of pain (Agliopobia) if they fall is another associated phobia that often goes along with Acrophobia.
As in all phobias, different people manifest Acrophobia in different ways and in different extremes. The fear could be a constant in all situations or only present in certain situations.

Acrophobia Symptoms:
Many people can feel a bit nervous of heights but the difference in people with Acrophobia is that people have extreme, excessive and irrational reactions of fear to heights. This will cause them to avoid heights at any costs which can severely limit their lives. People have a wide range of reactions to phobias. It is different for every person but the reactions are one of the biggest reasons to seek treatment as the experience can cause extreme anxiety that takes hours to leave. A person could have a full blown panic attack which can be dangerous in certain situations.
Other symptoms can include:
Other symptoms can include:
- Rapid heart rate
- Dizziness
- Screaming
- Hysteria
- Hyperventilating
- Feeling of choking
- Fainting
- Trembling and/or sweating
- Crying
- Nausea or other gastrointestinal distress
Why You Should Seek Help:
Despite the obvious unpleasantness and even dangerous aspects of having a panic attack, a phobia can really limit life. Acrophobia can affect people in many day to day situations and leave them dependent on others as well as limit where they go and what activities they enjoy. Someone might never travel on an airplane because of it and miss seeing new parts of the world or family and friends. Acrophobia can also affect people in the workplace if they need to go to high floor of a building with lots of glass windows and be unable to cope. It can also be dangerous. Take a situation where someone with Acrophobia is driving and if they are going over a bridge and a panic attack happens with a potential fatal crash. It is certainly a fear that will dramatically affect and limit the life of a person who suffers from it. No fear out of one's control is healthy.
