Fear Of Fungus: MyCophobia

About:

Mycophobia is the irrational fear of fungus in all varieties. Mycophobia is from the Greek words 'myco' which means fungus and 'phobos', which means to dread or to fear.

People suffering with Mycophobia are terrified of getting  ill from things that are a fungi. These can include toadstools, mushrooms and particluarly mould (mold is the US). Often people have heard stories when they were children about the dangers of eating stoadstools or have heard about the dangers of spores from black mould that can enter the lungs or eyes and cause a reaction.  The world to the Mycophobic appears as a place to be vigligant, espcially in damp or dirty places. They will avoid bathrooms and swimming pools with any sign of mould but also forests where they can see wild mushrooms or toadstools growing.

The Mycophobic is also terrified of getting ill and are very afraid of environments with fungus or fungi. Very rarely will they fear both toadstools and mould it tends to be one or the other. They usually become even more obsessive about cleaning any signs of mould if they do fall ill but will try to get other people to do it. They are constantly thinking about the fungus that could potentially contaminate them and do everything to prevent it.
Can I Be Cured?

Interesting Fact:

The phobia of mould doesn't have it's own name. It's either linked to Mysophobia the fear of germs or Mycophobia the fear of fungus.

Causes:

Many people with Mycophobia will have seen extreme reactions from parents that are worried by mushrooms or mould. In rare cases they may have been an illness or sickness as a result but in most cases it's hearing about the dangers early in childhood that cause the phobia.

Like many other phobias, this phobia can also be learned from parents who have it (who might also have OCD as well) The learned behaviour from parents is how the phobia can be developed without having OCD. The media and entertainment industry also feed into this fear with news reports and films about sickness caused by mould particularly in poor quality housing. Ocassionaly there are also stories of people getting sick of dying as a result of eating wild or rare mushrooms - this can make the fear worse.

Symptoms:

People with Mycophobia are often seen avoiding any place with mould particularly black mould caused by damp. The sufferer might avoid public restrooms, transport, animals and other social situations. For those with a fear of wild mushrooms or toadstools they won't even get close to them if they see them outside or even in a grocery.

Symptoms can include:

  1. Rapid heart rate
  2. Dizziness
  3. Hot or cold flashes
  4. Hysteria
  5. Chest pain
  6. Feeling of choking
  7. Fainting
  8. Trembling and/or sweating
  9. Obsessive cleaning of surfaces or oneself
  10. Nausea or other gastrointestinal distress

This fear can easily develop into other phobias like Mysophobia Fear of Germs. Just being around fungus, mould or mushrooms can cause them to have a panic attack.

Why You Should Get Treated:

Because fungus and mould are in many places, the trigger for someone experiencing Mycophobia is potentially everywhere, with no real way to escape it. Most Mycophobes feel they are endlessly on guard. This can severely limit the life in almost every way.

Why See The Phobia Guru For Treatment:

I am often able to help people break free of their phobia in just one session, using the scientifically proven power of hypnotherapy combined with NLP and an immersive therapy option. My therapy skillfully combines these techniques uniquely to create the most powerful, effective and quickest way to beat a phobia.  You will be in the hands of a trained phobia expert who will help you transform your mind and liberate yourself from even the most extreme fears.

Hypnotherapy is so effective with phobias because it tackles the underlying trigger of the phobia within the subconscious. Once a person has access to their subconscious they can eliminate their conditioned response to the stimulus. So instead of treating just the symptoms, hypnotherapy can heal the source for a lasting result. The best part about hypnotherapy and phobias is that often it only takes one session to completely get over the phobia so you do not have to spend a lot of money on continual treatment. The NHS also promotes hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for phobias.
