What is Ligyrophobia?
Ligyrophobia is the extreme fear of loud noised. Ligryrophobia is the clinical term for this phobia and is Greek in origin. 'Ligyro' translates to sharp (in reference to noise) and 'phobia' means to dread or to fear.
Most people do not find loud noises pleasant as they usually shock, surprise and make people slightly disorientated and confused. This is why alarms are used to protect houses as it not only alters other people of a break in but confuses the burglars as well. The fear of loud noises is one of the only two fears we are born with, (along with the fear of falling) however for most, the affects are only temporarily and the most severe reactions wear off largely by adulthood.
However, someone suffering from Ligyrophobia will be so afraid of loud noises that they can go into a panic attack and struggle for a long time to calm down after hearing a loud noise. So though the fear is essentially innate, it is over exaggerated and can affect the person's day to day life.
People who have a fear of thunder and lightning (Astraphobia) will often have Ligyrophobia as well.

Interesting Fact:
Ligyrophobia has several different names and can also be known as: Sonophobia, Acousticophobia, or Phonophobia. All of these words are Greek in origin and all mean 'loud sound' 'alarm' or 'noise.'
Ligyrophobia Causes:
As mentioned, the fear of loud noises is a natural instinctual fear to help our ancestors to take cover and hide when needed such as in a thunderstorm or if a predator animal is approaching. However, in our modern day culture, this fear is strongest in children who are more sensitive and still learning about the world around them. As they grow older, this fear becomes less intense as what loud noises are a real threat and what are not are distinguished.
However, if something traumatic happened in childhood, like a car accident where a loud honking of a horn was involved, it can have a lasting impression and the fear can stay just as intense or even more intense as the child grows. This is the mind's way of trying to protect the person from further similar danger however, it does not always become useful or relevant in adulthood.
A child could also learn and pick this phobia up from a parent as with every other phobia.
There are other contributing factors that causes a person to be extra sensitive to sound that can be a cause for Ligyrophobia. People who suffer from psychological conditions that intensify sound sensitivity like Misophonia, adrenal insufficiency, or Hyperacusis can develop Ligyrophobia. Also people with Autism can have sound sensitivity and can develop this phobia. Loud noises, especially repetitive ones can be unbearable for people with these conditions.
People who suffer from intense and/or regular migraines can also easily develop Ligyrophobia .

Ligyrophobia Symptoms:
Not everyone with this phobia will react the same to every loud noise. For many, it might be very particular loud noises that were associated with the formation of the phobia itself, for instance, the honking of a car or thunder. For some, if it is a sound sensitivity, it will be every loud noise. It depends on the individual. But for whatever the loud noise is that triggers the person suffering from Ligyrophobia, they will feel intense anxiety and fear.
Symptoms can also include:
People suffering with this phobia will often avoid certain situations were loud noises might be a problem like concerts, parties, firework displays, crowds, etc. They might become unable to perform tasks or function normally if they are in an environment with too many loud noises.
Children suffering from this phobia will often cover their ears in distress and refuse to go out into busy noisy environments or might have sudden outburst of tears or tantrums in loud environments.
Symptoms can also include:
- Rapid heart rate
- Shock
- Screaming
- Hysteria
- Hyperventilating
- Feeling of choking
- Fainting
- Trembling and/or sweating

- Nausea or other gastrointestinal distress

Why I Should Get Treated:
Loud noises are often unpredictable but are an everyday part of life. Loud noises can come from such a wide variety of sources that they are virtually impossible to avoid, even within the comfort of your own home. Having this phobia will subconsciously put you under a lot of tension and can cause you to avoid many wonderful aspects of life just because of the chance of a loud noise happening.
One might become very isolated and lose many friends in their bid to avoid experiencing being around loud noises and miss out on travel, career and even relationship opportunities. Someone suffering from this phobia will be continuously experiencing stress and a low standard of mental health as fear will dominate the decision making process.

The best part about hypnotherapy and phobias is that often it only takes one session to completely get over the phobia so you do not have to spend a lot of money on continual treatment. The NHS also promotes hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for phobias.
