The Fear of Dogs: Cynohphobia

What is Cynohphobia?

Cynohphobia is the fear of dogs, great and small. The phobia is not limited to just large dogs perceived as aggressive like Pit Bulls or Rottweilers: a Cynophobic could be afraid of even very small dogs like a Chihuahua  or a miniature poodle. Though not as common as snake phobias (Ophidiophobia) or spider phobias (Arachnophobia) a dog phobia is still very problematic, as so many people love and own dogs!

The origins of the word Ophidiophobia is Greek, derived from the  word ‘Kyno’ which translates to 'dog' and the word 'phobia' which means dread or fear.
Can I Be Cured?

Interesting Fact:

Dogs are very sensitive and can sense fear. Being afraid around dog will make them more hesitant around us. This can perpetuate the false belief that all dogs are unfriendly and a threat for Cynophobic people.

Cynohphobia Causes:

Most people develop a fear of dogs because they had a traumatic experience with one such as being bitten, especially at a young age. This is why people can be afraid of even a very small dog. Or something like seeing a scary film or image with an aggressive dog or wolf might trigger the phobia. It can even be the sound dogs make like growling, snarling, howling and loud barking that creates the fear for people, especially people with the fear of loud noises, Phonophobia.

Another reason for Cynophobia, like so many phobias, is a learned behaviour. If a parent or sibling has a fear of dogs it is very easy to accidentally teach someone else to have the same fear, especially if they are younger. If a parent acts hesitant around dogs and pulls their children away, a child will learn an association of negativity and fear around dogs. How parents support their children to be confident in general can play a big part in a person's feelings around dogs and other animals.

Cynohphobia Symptoms:

People with Cynohphobia can have a different degrees of severity in their phobic reactions and can experience a range of different symptoms. As mentioned before, it could be any breed of dog at any size. Often a person afraid of dogs will start trembling at the sight of a dog, could scream, have a rapid heartbeat and struggle to breath regularly. They might break out in a sweat and become paralyzed with fear, unable to react. Others might instantly run away as fast as they can. Some people might even feel faint when they come into contact with dogs. In the most severe cases, people can have these type of reactions to even filmed recording of dogs and pictures of dogs.

Symptoms can include:

  1. Rapid heart rate
  2. Dizziness
  3. Hot or cold flashes
  4. Hysteria
  5. Chest pain
  6. Feeling of choking
  7. Fainting
  8. Trembling and/or sweating
  9. Numbness or tingling sensation
  10. Nausea or other gastrointestinal distress

Why You Should Get Help:

Dogs are everywhere and most people love dogs. They are the most popular pets in the world so there are a lot of dogs around! It is very difficult to avoid dogs! If you live your entire life afraid of dogs you will subconsciously live in continuous fear as dogs can appear anytime or anyplace. Spending your life avoiding parks and walking outside will not only be bad for your physical health but also your mental health. And if you ever have children, you could pass this debilitating fear onto them.

Dogs are also featured in films, TV shows and frequently pop up in social media posts. It is very difficult to avoid dogs so getting rid of the phobia will lead to a better quality of life with a lot less unneeded stress!

Why Should I Go To The Phobia Guru For Treatment:

I am often able to help people break free of their phobia in just one session with the scientifically proven power of hypnotherapy, combined with NLP and an immersive therapy option. My therapy skillfully combines these techniques uniquely to create the most powerful, effective and quickest way to beat a phobia.  You will be in the hands of a trained phobia expert who will help you transform your mind and liberate yourself from even the most extreme fears.

Hypnotherapy is so effective with phobias because it tackles the underlying trigger of the phobia within the subconscious. Once a person has access to their subconscious they can eliminate their conditioned response to the stimulus. So instead of treating just the symptoms, hypnotherapy can heal the source for a lasting result. The best part about hypnotherapy and phobias is that often it only takes one session to completely get over the phobia so you do not have to spend a lot of money on continual treatment. The NHS also promotes hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for phobias.
