What is Aerophobia?
Aerophobia is the fear of flying, usually on an airplane. But this could extend to any type of flying. Though many people have mild anxiety about flying and feel a little nervous, the Aerophobic suffers from extreme anxiety from flying and is usually unable to get onto a plane to travel.
The origins of the word Aerophobia is Greek, derived from the word ‘aero’ which translates to air or wind and the word 'phobia' which means dread or fear.

Interesting Fact:
Around 25% of all air travelers suffer from Aerophobia! Though travelling in an airplane is actually the safest mode of transportation. The odds of a plane are only one for every 1.2 million flights! This means your odds of dying in a plane crash are only one in 11 million! While the odds of dying in a car crash on the other hand, are much higher with a one in 5,000 chance!
Causes:
Aerophobia usually seems to be rooted in other phobias like which they themselves could have been developed from traumatic experiences. People with aerophobia very commonly have phobias like Acrophobia (fear of heights) and Claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces).
The fear of death (Thanatophobia) is another big phobia associated with Aerophobia and can be a big reason for its cause. So many films portray absolutely terrifying plane crashes and this builds in the mind of the Aerophobic. Even news reports of any plane crashes will contribute to the fear.
Sometimes a social phobia can be the cause of Aerophobia, as being seated on a plane requires one to sit very close to lots of other people.
Physical conditions can also contribute to one developing Aerophobia such as veritgo, sinus, issues and other nasal conditions, ear problems like Tinnitus, motion sickness, and stiff painful joints. These sort of problems are aggravated while in flight and can feed into the fear of being in extreme discomfort or pain while flying.
Someone might have had an actual traumatic experience while flying that has created a subconscious fear of all flying. Like all phobias, it can be learned from a parent or sibling as well.

Why You Should Get Help:
Having any fear out of one's control is never healthy but not being able to fly is very limiting. Flying is essential to the modern lifestyle as we have become a global community. Family often live all over the world, business often requires plane travel and many holidays and foreign destinations relay on plane travel. To be unable to fly is cutting oneself off from many opportunities in their careers, holidays and even from friends and family. This can affect ones long term happiness and mental well-being. Plus having a panic attack on a plane can be very terrifying and embarrassing.
