What is Agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a social anxiety disorder that is associated with an irrational fear of being in open crowded spaces and having a panic attack. Not being able to escape any given situation is largely what drives the fear. This can manifest unusually though in very opposite way. Some Agoraphobics become housebound, while others are terrified to be alone at home so they actually seek crowds. This can be when the agoraphobia has a cross over phobia with Claustrophobia, the fear of small enclosed spaces and Monophobia, the fear of being alone. This may seem strange, however it is not uncommon for the phobia to work in this way.
The origins of the word Agoraphobia is Greek, derived from the word ‘agora’ which translates to a place of assembly or meeting place and the word phobia which means dread or fear. Because so much of modern life is revolved around crowded open spaces, one can imagine the implications this fear has on a person.

Interesting Fact:
Agoraphobia is unique among phobias as it is usually the result of experiencing a panic attack itself.
Causes:
Agoraphobia is often linked to other panic and anxiety disorders and other mental health disorders. A traumatic experience, hospitalization, drug and alcohol abuse, war, natural disasters, divorce are all things that have triggered Agoraphobia in people. Sometimes when something causes a person to withdraw for a while they can develop Agoraphobia from being isolated. Other links have been made to suggest that Agoraphobia can be a result of long term sleeping pill or tranquilizer use. Some individuals that struggle with spatial orientation, balance or have weak vestibular functions also develop Agoraphobia.
Symptoms:
How a person may react to a phobia is different for every person but they are all unpleasant. It is the fear of these symptoms that causes Agoraphobia in the first place. It is a self perpetuating cycle. People with Agoraphobia often experience rapid heartbeat and shallow breathing.
Other symptoms can also include:
The anxiety is overwhelming and feels beyond the control of the Angoraphobic when faced with the stimuli and they will often feel depressed and limited because of their fear. This can further cause them to become very detached to others and themselves. A low self of confidence often goes hand in hand with these sort of symptoms so this phobia is devastating for the mental well-being of a person who has it.

Why You Should Get Help:
Despite the obvious scary and even dangerous aspects of having a panic attack, a phobia can really limit life. Agoraphobia is a fear that has sever life limiting consequences making the world of an individual who suffers from it very small and very isolated. Many people who struggle with Agoraphobia miss out on many wonderful life opportunities because of the fear and even most day to day activities.
This causes the mental health and self confidence of the person to suffer greatly. People with Agoraphobia can suffer serious physical health consequences from staying indoors constantly. The anxiety is also a constant background noise within the mind of an Agoraphobic and leaves the person with relentless subconscious tension and uneasiness.
