Finding the right treatment to cure your phobia can be frustrating. Some options are expensive others don’t have proper research to back them up, or they cause unwanted side effects, only shifting the issue. Your best bet is finding a professional to guide you through the process. Here are all the options you have, feel free to try more multiple of these methods.
Alternative Treatment
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy- It is not uncommon for people to have doubts about hypnotherapy treatment for phobias however there have been several case studies that have proved this treatment can work. Hypnotherapy isn’t how Hollywood and the media makes it out to be. It is simply about getting the client into a relaxed state where the subconscious can be accessed without the constant distractions the conscious mind throws around. Once the client is in this state, they are in complete control while also being more susceptible to what the hypnotherapist is saying.
  • Homoeopathy- Homoeopathic medicine consists of taking diluted toxins to rid the client of their phobia. It is uncommon for doctors to recommend this treatment as there isn’t enough evidence to prove homoeopathy really works. This form of ‘medication’ has been around for a couple of centuries and many vouch that is does work however it could just be the placebo effect taking place. If you are considering trying homoeopathy, ensure you speak with your doctor or a professional. Doses should not go over a certain point or they can be harmful.
  • Natural Remedies- Some people prefer to try using natural remedies for their phobias before trying other methods. This could be because they are sceptical of certain methods such as hypnotherapy or because they are usually expensive. It is advised that the client does not depend on herbal remedies alone and that they consult with a professional what the best treatment is for them.

Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy- CGT is always different depending on the client. Not everyone thinks the same, so the therapist must adapt based on the client's needs. With CBT, the therapist encourages the client to change the negative thoughts they have of their phobia to rationalised and positive thoughts. They may also expose the client to their phobia and increase the exposure slowly. Being in the present moment is also important for this treatment and different relaxation techniques may be used.
  • Group Therapy- Group therapy can be beneficial for people with phobias that feel embarrassed and isolated. There are many groups that focus on phobias so that the members can relate to each other. Seeing others improving and not letting their phobia defeat them encourages the other members to do the same. Family therapy can work for others too. This helps the family to learn how they can deal with phobia triggers etc appropriately and be better support for the client.

Medication
Medication for social phobias can be prescribed by a doctor or a qualified professional. Specific phobias are more complicated to treat with medication. Medication isn’t always necessary as phobias are easily cured through therapy, however, some may prefer to take it if their phobia is extreme.
  • Antidepressants & Benzodiazepines & MAOIs for Social Phobia- Antidepressants alter the level of serotonin which affects the patient’s mood. Benzodianes are tranquillizers that reduce the levels of anxiety. MAOIs break down specific neurotransmitters. All these drugs have possible side effects on the body so talk to your doctor about the best option for you personally.
  • Beta-Blockers are only a short-term solution. They stop the adrenaline and the symptoms that come along with it, such as sweating and trembling.

At phobia guru, I have found that the most effective method is hypnotherapy with elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It has proved so effective in fact that I have cured phobias in one 90-minute session, so there is no need to complicate your life with medication etc. If you want to learn more click here and if you would like to book a free consultation click here.
