What is Glossophobia?
Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking or speaking in front of others. That could mean just two or three people or thousands. The meaning of Glossophobia comes from the Greek Word 'glōssa' which translates in English to tongue, and 'phobos', which means to dread or to fear.
Stage fright is one of the most common phobias in the world. Many people start sweating at just the thought of getting in front of people and making a speech but are able to do so if a situation demands it such as a toast at a wedding or speech at a funeral for a loved one. However, for some people, they ability to think about public speaking is an impossibility. Any attempt made results in the person being frozen in fear, mouth dried, hands shaking and no words coming out! Worse yet, this can then escalate to a full blown panic attack.

Interesting Fact:
Alongside the fear of spiders and snakes, Glossophobia is the most common phobia in the world.
Glossophobia Causes:
There is no clear cause for Glossophobia but like other phobias it can be learned either from a parent, sibling, friend or other family member. It can also be linked to traumatic experiences happening either in childhood or adulthood. Often low self esteem, perfectionism and approval seeking are common traits in people suffering from Glossophobia. Being not encouraged enough as a child by parents or peers or if one was bullied can also contribute to the the cause of the phobia.
Glossophobia Symptoms:
Even the thought of getting up and speaking in front of anyone can make a Glossophobic start to react in an anxious way. Often people suffering from Glossophobia will suffer a dry mouth, sweating palms, a quivering voice, trembling hands and nausea when reacting to the phobia. However, any of the other common phobic reactions could occur depending on the individual as people have a wide range of reactions to phobias. It is different for every person but the reactions are one of the biggest reasons to seek treatment as the experience can cause extreme anxiety that takes hours to leave. A person could have a full blown panic attack which can be dangerous in certain situations.
Why You Should Seek Help:
A panic attack is never a fun experience and having a phobia that could affect your opportunities in life is very limiting. People with Glossophobia often start avoiding situations where they might be expected to make a speech as the phobia can cause them extreme embarrassment. But this might mean letting your best friend down at their wedding, or forever regretting being unable to give your final respects to your Nan at her funeral. One might miss many career opportunities because they are unable to make a presentation and thus miss out on a better quality of life that would come with a higher pay rise. So it is a fear that will very much dictate your life instead of you.

Hypnotherapy is so effective with phobias because it tackles the underlying trigger of the phobia within the subconscious. Once a person has access to their subconscious they can eliminate their conditioned response to the stimulus. So instead of treating just the symptoms, hypnotherapy can heal the source for a lasting result. The best part about hypnotherapy and phobias is that often it only takes one session to completely get over the phobia so you do not have to spend a lot of money on continual treatment. The NHS also promotes hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for phobias.
